The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) claimed a major victory at the 2025 Convocation Fun Games organized by the Council of Convocation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, topping the event with a 4–2 win over University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) in the much-anticipated football match.
Held at the Paa Joe Sports Stadium to mark this year’s Labour Day celebration, the games brought together KNUST staff and their families for a lively day of both indoor and outdoor activities
These included aerobics, Table Tennis, Ludo, chess, Oware/draughts, cards, sack race, lime and spoon, and a host of games for children.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor at the opening ceremony, Professor John Tiah Bugri, Provost of the College of Art and Built Environment, highlighted the value of such events in fostering community well-being.
“We are a community of value, a community of knowledge, and a community of practice. For these to function effectively and efficiently in fulfilling our mandate, we must bear in mind that a healthy body is essential for a sound mind to thrive,” he said.
“Without a sound mind, we cannot fulfill our responsibilities as a community of knowledge and practice. Initiatives like this are a positive step in the right direction.”
Dr. Emmanuel De-Graft Johnson Owusu-Ansah, Chairman of the Council of Convocation, expressed gratitude to university management and the Organizing Committee for their support and dedication, urging staff to participate fully in the games.
Professor Jacob Agbenorhevi, Chairman of the Planning Committee, expressed his appreciation for the strong turnout at this year’s games.
“This year’s turnout has been significantly better than last year. We recorded about 700 participants. Overall, it was a successful event, and we hope it will continue to improve in the years ahead. Today, we took a break from our usual work routine to exercise and remind ourselves of the importance of staying healthy,” he said.
In addition to GAUA’s football triumph, the men’s and women’s sack races saw victories by Mr. James Kwasi Oberko, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office, and Dr. (Mrs.) Yaa Asantewaa Osei, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutics, respectively.
Medals were awarded across all categories to celebrate the spirit of fun, fitness, and community.
